A tall, fast growing biennial plant Has a woody, earthy tone with a slight peppery top note. It is commonly found in perfume blends and massage oils and is thought to have relaxing properties. Candies stalks of the plant are popular in France and Spain.

Traditional uses: The whole plant was once used as protection form the plague. Some stories claim that is name comes from a monk who was visited by an angel that told him to use the plant to treat victims of the plague. Used in Europe since antiquity for bronchial cold/coughs and digestive disruptions and gas. Also used to stimulate the appetite. 
Actions: antispasmodic, diaphoretic, carminative, diuretic, stimulant, emmenagogue, expectorant, nervine, and tonic. 

Blends well with: Patchouli, Basil, Chamomile, Geranium, Lavender Clary Sage, Vetiver, Oakmoss, and Citrus Colognes

Aromatherapy uses:  Often used in skin care products as a tonic as it tonifies and softens skin. Can aid inflamed and irritated skin. Has been shown useful as a blood and lymph stimulator and aids in drainage. A tonic for the digestive tract. Has uses for aiding in decongesting the lungs and removing excess mucus. Encourages the production of estrogen and is closely related to the Chinese medicine herb Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) Strengthens the nerves and can restore energy. Used as a pian reliver in headaches and tooth aches. Studies have shown its use in curbing nicotine cravings when inhaled. 

Cautions: The root, not the seed oil, has phototoxicity as it is high in bergapten. Do not put on skin for 24-48 hours before sun exposure or tanning beds. Not safe for use in pregnancy or in cases of diabetes.
